The Best Sugar Substitutes for Kids and Teens

Let’s be real, sugar has many harmful effects and can lead to numerous health issues, such as obesity and diabetes. However, even thinking about eliminating sugar from your children’s diet may seem stressful. Children always seem to be reaching for something sweet. It can be hard to satisfy their sweet tooth without giving them too much sugar, which is why I have created a list of the four best sugar substitutes for your children. These alternatives do not have the same harmful effects as regular sugar, and in fact, they each have their own benefit.

 

  1. Raw Honey – Honey that is not pasteurized or chemically altered is sweet and contains many beneficial nutrients, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and more. It can easily be added to foods, such as cereal or yogurt, for an extra sweet taste.

 

  1. Maple Syrup - Some studies have shown maple syrup contains antioxidants that prevent cancer. However, be sure to buy the raw or pure maple syrup to avoid the ones that are chemically altered. Maple syrup can also be used as a sugar substitute when baking to create a healthier dessert.

 

  1. Agave - This is a syrup that comes from the agave plant, and it has a low sugar level, which is what makes it such an appealing sugar substitute. Due to its low sugar level, it does not spike your kids blood sugar level like regular sugar does. Despite this, it is still a sweet syrup your children will love, and it can be easily baked with or added to foods to sweeten them.

 

  1. Blackstrap Molasses - Like agave, this thick syrup has a low sugar level, so giving it to your children won’t spike their blood sugar levels as much as regular sugar. Further, the blackstrap molasses specifically is highly nutritious containing nutrients, such as iron, vitamin B6, potassium, calcium, and more.

 

Substituting sugar with an alternative that does not have the same harmful effects for your children is strongly encouraged. So next time your children have a craving for something sweet, try substituting sugar with one of the above healthier alternatives, but keep in mind, too much of any sweet substance can also be harmful.
