How to Make Your Own Yummy Toothpaste

How to Make Your Own Yummy Toothpaste

May 14, 2018

Do you know what is in the toothpaste your children use every morning and night? Many parents overlook the potentially harmful ingredients that toothpaste contains, such as fluoride, glycerin, sweeteners, and artificial dyes. Some of the ingredients have been linked to a multitude of health issues. However, toothpaste does not have to be damaging for your children. The best toothpaste for your children may actually be homemade toothpaste. All of the ingredients listed below are natural and have beneficial effects in toothbrushing.

  • Coconut oil - Coconut oil helps fight bacteria in the mouth that are known to cause cavities.

  • Baking soda - Baking soda neutralizes acid that our teeth are exposed to every day.

  • Bentonite clay - Bentonite clay works to polish teeth without damaging them.

The above ingredients are just a few of the many that can be used to make your own yummy toothpaste. See below for specific recipes.

Wellness Mama:

  • ½ cup coconut oil softened
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 packets stevia powder (this makes the toothpaste less bitter and more sweet)
  • Peppermint or cinnamon essential oil (depending on your preferred flavor)

The Pistachio Project:

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil softened
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • ⅛ teaspoon stevia
  • Peppermint essential oil

Thank Your Body:

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 4 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons filtered water
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • Peppermint essential oil

Aside from the three recipes listed above, you can find many more recipes to make your own yummy (and non-damaging) toothpaste at home. I encourage you to find other ways and experiment on your own to find a toothpaste recipe that you and your children love.
